At 9 years old, Audrey was already recognised as a great future athlete. She was practicing speed skating as a hobby in her home town and dreaming about the Olympics. In 1998, Audrey discovered cycling competitions. François Duchesne, president of the cycling team in Alma, met the young athletes of the speed skating club to encourage them to practice cycling during the summer. Audrey agreed immediately and she represented her region (Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean) at "Les Jeux du Québec" in Alma, 1999. As these two sports require mainly the same qualities and aptitudes, adaptation to cycling from speed skating was easy for her. During her first year in competition, Audrey became rapidly recognised as one of the best cycling hopes in Quebec. At this event, she won three gold and one silver medal.
In 1999, Audrey Lemieux dominated provincial cycling in her age category. She was named Hopeful Athlete 1999 by the Quebec Cycling Federation (She also won this award in 2002) and she was ranked first in Quebec in her category. In 2000, Audrey decided to take a sabbatical year to try another sport, soccer, and to also concentrate her efforts on another passion, music. She was also very good at practicing soccer, and all her energy was concentrated on those two activities.
In spring 2001, Audrey decided to return to her first passion, cycling, after having received a phone call from her coach, Nicolas Tremblay. Audrey started her training with enthusiasm to be ready for the "Jeux du Quebec" hosted by the city of Lachine in August 2001. After a meeting with her coach, she decided to give up soccer to put all her effort into cycling. Even if the decision of quitting soccer was heartbreaking for her, with all the success obtained since then, Audrey doesn’t regret her choice.
In 2002, Audrey began to study in Humanities and in "Sport-Études" at the college of Granby where she still studying. During the off season, she practices cross-country skiing, swimming and in-door training with her coach.
Audrey’s recent success is probably due to her determination and discipline, acquired during the past years of practicing many sports. Audrey is very positive in everything she does, and her good mood is much appreciated by everyone. Audrey also attributes her strong performance to great support from her parents, coaches and friends.
